SUTTON in HOLDERNESS
HISTORY

Posted on this page will be links to
Online Books by various authors

pertaining to the older history of this area; books that were
formerly thought of as only being of interest to 'antiquarians',
books that were rare or very expensive.

A deeper interest in the history of our area, back into
ancient times perhaps makes antiquarians of us all.

THOMAS BLASHILL
SUTTON-IN-HOLDERNESS
THE MANOR, THE BEREWIC, AND THE VILLAGE COMMUNITY 1896
.
This first historic book can only be read online, by going to the link above, which then opens in a new browser window. Using the above link, this book has over 340 pages, downloads into your PDF reader, and takes a little while to load; it's around 15Mb in size. I have to admit, it is good, an impressive way to read online.
The pages actually 'turn' as well.
And YES, it is FREE.

The HULL POLL BOOK of 1835, a list of all voters, and just as interesting, listing all the streets in Hull. There's 80-something pages, the first pages are blank; use your mouse wheel within the book to scroll. Additionally, there is a 'window scroller' at the side which works independently of the main window.

HULL POLL BOOK 1835

George POULSON 1841
The history and antiquities of the seigniory of Holderness
Use online, or read here below.

As above, the first page shown is the cover;
use your scroll wheel within the book to scroll down.
Once loaded, it's fully searchable, and also fully zoomable.
I'd be first to admit, this and others below are not quite so easy to read,
for a long read, as Bashill's very clear Sutton history above.
So think of them for dipping into, for research, and accessible at home!

JAMES JOSEPH SHEAHAN .. 1864
General and concise history and description
of the town and port of
Kingston-upon-Hull

WILLIAM HUTTON .. 1813
THE BATTLE OF BOSWORTH FIELD,

Between Richard the Third and Henry Earl of Richmond,

With Plans of the Battle, Its Consequences,
the Fall, Treatment, and Character of Richard.

Considering the discovery of King Richard's bones under a car park,
this may prove to be rivetting reading to serious historians.
But it is hard going ...

HISTORICAL DIRECTORIES for ENGLAND & WALES
This link is a real discovery
if you've never seen it before;
Trade and Business Directories

If you're also researching family links in other towns and counties,
this link could be a real boon.

It has to open in a new browser.

choose yours, and away you go.

For a bit of light reading, continuing in the historical genre,
a story of blood, intrigue and revolution;
A TALE OF TWO CITIES
Book the Second

by Charles Dickens.

You can also read the full story, all three books,
HERE at the Gutenberg website,
full screen, in a new browser window.

Enjoy.

Or this version ... ..

Other eBooks, or links to them, may well
be added here in the fullness of time.

Many an old pupil must have spent hours daydreaming and staring up at this timbered roof.
But it would have been woebetide any child if the teacher had caught them indulging in such a wasteful occupation.
