Details of all men killed
whilst serving their country
can be viewed on the
Commonwealth War Graves Commission Website
(opens in a new window)

The Stoneferry Memorial . .
was mounted on the Bandstand, until the 1930's, then moved to
St Saviour's Church, together with that of Wilmington.
Subjected to vandalism, it was moved inside St Saviour's in the early 1950's.
When that church was demolished, the memorials were taken to Sutton.
They were released to the Museums Service in c.1996 for a special exhibition,
and are now (2022) in the safe care of the Hull Streetlife Museum.

Below is a higher quality photo showing all the names on this memorial,
listing ALL the men who served, as well as killed and wounded,
and can also be viewed on-screen inside the museum on Fridays.

NB: The Bandstand was where the large roundabout
is now, at the bottom of Leads Road.

Why are these men remembered at Sutton?

The Men of Stoneferry All of these three areas, St Mark's, Wilmington, and Stoneferry, were part of the historic Sutton parish for very nearly 600 years, from the 1300s to the 1880s.
Hence why the safe-keeping of the memory of these men and their families is now willingly taken care of at Sutton ... for there is nowhere else.

In addition to the first list above, which is an exact transcription of all the names that appear on the original stone plaques formerly set into the earth around the memorial, there is now this updated list as a result of more recent research and which now appears on this new marble plaque within the Sutton memorial.  These are the ones that list just the men of Stoneferry, who appeared on their original memorial at St Saviours Church on Stoneferry Rd ... now the site of Brook's Tile store opposite the bus depot.
This list is expandable for clearer reading, click or tap with a mouse.

The Civilian War Dead Index for WW II
(also opens in a new window)
The above link takes you to another website
and pages that list all the
civilian wartime casualties of enemy action
in Northumberland, Durham and Yorkshire.
You'll have no difficulty in spotting the Hull ones . .
sadly, they are easily the more numerous.

There are 14 CWGC War Graves within
Sutton churchyard itself, and another 5 family graves or
memorials of men from both wars, a total of 19.
They are mainly of men from other parts of the UK,
and one of an RAF pilot from Cooma, NSW, Australia.

"Their names liveth for evermore . . ."
