MAP TO FIND US Dead-end side road is a free car park ! It used to be 'the Pinfold', or 'Pinny', where schoolgirls tied up their ponies! Our area covers the historic parishes of both Sutton and Wawne villages. Sutton parish also included Stoneferry, Wilmington, St Marks & The Groves, all the way down to the north side of Witham, until the 1880s when new churches for those areas were built. 70 of his drawings online walk down a field of memories |

Photos of all 14 CWGC War Graves in St James' churchyard have been on this site since Armistice Day back in 2009, and a full list of Sutton dead in both world wars since before 2000. Photos of a further 5 'Family' War Graves and Memorials were added in time for Armistice Day in 2014. A database of the 420+ men on all of our memorial plaques was started in 2014, and completed in time for the 2018 anniversaries; it includes over 240 men who were previously not remembered here within their own parishes and local memorials. The new plaques can be seen on the War Memorial ~ For those seeking, or interested in 'Military Links', our page comes recommended. We are the holders of a huge photo archive, possibly the largest 'village archive' in the East Riding. The Sutton collection alone comprises some 3,500 images, and the Wawne collection a further 500; well over 4,000 photos of the area and its people. There are many more in smaller individual donated collections too, including those of a famous former headmaster, from the 1960s, and the collections of two former vicars, some from before 1900. Plus a further 2,000 images of gravestones, memorials and plaques. We are one of four other such historic Grade II Listed schools in the Hull area. If you or your kin were ever married or worshipped in Sutton or Wawne, you may enjoy access to our 'online-DVD' - for just £5. It features both historic medieval churches ... CLICK HERE for details. The Groves "Eternal Father, strong to save, Whose arm hath bound the restless wave" How many of you have sung this hymn? Most of you, at a guess. Did you know the tune, 'Melita', was composed by a man who was born in Sutton Parish? John Bacchus Dykes was born down Lime Street, The Groves, in 1823, and a part of the enormous Sutton parish at that time. For marriages, baptisms and funerals, he would have to have come to St James' in Sutton, this was his church. Until the 1870s, ours was the largest parish in England; it was massive! SUTTON in HOLDERNESS In ancient times, the 1300s right up to the Victorian era, Sutton was the largest parish in England, massive, and stretched right down the river to Witham/North Bridge, and over to Holderness Road in the east. So our historic areas of interest are : Sutton-on-Hull, Wawne, the Groves, Stoneferry, Wilmington, RAF Sutton, RAF Balloon Command, Sutton-in-Holderness, St James' Church, St Peter's, Waghen, war memorial, genealogy, family history research, heritage, ancestry, Yorkshire history, old school, and Victorian interests. We are the best free museum in this area. |
