Photos of all 14 CWGC War Graves in St James' churchyard
have been on this site since Armistice Day back in 2009,
and a full list of Sutton dead in both world wars since before 2000.

Remembrance is not just about one week in November Photos of a further 5 'Family' War Graves and Memorials were
added in time for Armistice Day in 2014. A database of the 420+ men
on all of our memorial plaques was started in 2014, and completed in time for the
2018 anniversaries; it includes over 240 men who were previously
not remembered here within their own parishes and local memorials. Remembrance is not just about one week in November
The new plaques can be seen on the War Memorial ~
For those seeking, or interested in 'Military Links', our page comes recommended.

We are the holders of a huge photo archive, possibly the largest 'village archive'
in the East Riding. The Sutton collection alone comprises some 3,500 images, and the
Wawne collection a further 500; well over 4,000 photos of the area and its people.

There are many more in smaller individual donated collections too,
including those of a famous former headmaster, from the 1960s,
and the collections of two former vicars, some from before 1900.
Plus a further 2,000 images of gravestones, memorials and plaques.

We are one of four other such historic Grade II Listed schools in the Hull area.

If you or your kin were ever married or worshipped
in Sutton or Wawne, you may enjoy access
to our 'online-DVD' - for just £5.
It features both historic medieval churches ...

May you all enjoy your visit and brief stay with us.

Sutton parish area, is now on a dedicated page of its own.
It can be accessed by clicking

The Groves

"Eternal Father, strong to save,
Whose arm hath bound the restless wave"

How many of you have sung this hymn?  Most of you, at a guess.
Did you know the tune, 'Melita', was composed by a man who was born in Sutton Parish?
John Bacchus Dykes was born down Lime Street, The Groves, in 1823,
and a part of the enormous Sutton parish at that time. For marriages, baptisms and
funerals, he would have to have come to St James' in Sutton, this was his church.
Until the 1870s, ours was the largest parish in England; it was massive!

There's a link to a former background map right at the bottom of this page.

THE HOME PAGE ...

SUTTON in HOLDERNESS

In ancient times, the 1300s right up to the Victorian era, Sutton was the largest parish in England, massive, and stretched right down the river to Witham/North Bridge, and over to Holderness Road in the east.

So our historic areas of interest are :
Sutton-on-Hull, Wawne, the Groves, Stoneferry, Wilmington, RAF Sutton, RAF Balloon Command, Sutton-in-Holderness,
St James' Church, St Peter's, Waghen, war memorial, genealogy, family history research, heritage, ancestry, Yorkshire history,
old school, and Victorian interests.

We are the best free museum in this area.
